Council Permits

Do I Need a Permit in Vermont?

Vermont is in the Whitehorse City Council. Every residential area in Whitehorse now has some tree protection. Citywide, the statewide canopy-tree rule (Clause 52.37) requires a permit to remove or lop a tree over 5 m tall with a canopy at least 4 m wide if it's within 6 m of the front boundary or 4.5 m of the rear boundary (dead trees are exempt). In the Significant Landscape Overlay areas, mostly around Blackburn plus parts of Mitcham, Nunawading and Vermont, any tree with a single trunk 50 cm or more around at 1 m high needs a permit to remove or lop, wherever it is on the block. Vegetation Protection Overlays also protect individually listed trees.

We look up the overlay on your property before we quote, so you know up front whether a permit is needed.

FAQ

Tree Removal in Vermont: Common Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Vermont?

It depends on the tree's height, how close it is to buildings or lines, and access for the crew. Most residential removals land between about $650 and $2,800, stump grinding from about $250, and pruning from about $350. We quote a fixed price on-site, free, before any work starts.

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Vermont?

Vermont is in Whitehorse City Council. Large trees near the front or rear boundary need a permit under the statewide canopy-tree rule, and if your property is in a Significant Landscape Overlay area, any tree with a trunk 50 cm or more around at 1 m high needs a permit to remove or lop. Dead trees are generally exempt. We check your property's overlays at the quote.

How quickly can you quote in Vermont?

We're based on High Street, Kew East, so we can usually get to Vermont for a free on-site quote within 24 hours. We answer 24/7, so fallen or dangerous trees get a fast response day or night.

Do you clean up and take the green waste away?

Yes. Every job includes full clean-up: branches are chipped or taken away, logs removed and the site raked, so you're not left with a pile to deal with.

Can you remove a tree close to my house or fence in Vermont?

Yes. Tight backyards and trees over roofs are common in Vermont. We climb and lower the tree down in sections with ropes and rigging, so nothing drops on the house, fence or garden.
