Tree Work in Kew

Kew has some of the oldest gardens in Melbourne's east: large elms, oaks and gums planted generations ago, often close to period homes. Many of them are over Boroondara's canopy-tree size, so careful pruning and permit advice matter as much as removals.

Council Permits

Do I Need a Permit in Kew?

Kew is in the City of Boroondara. Boroondara's Tree Protection Local Law protects any private β€œcanopy tree” with a trunk circumference of 110 cm or more measured 1.4 m above ground, or 150 cm or more at ground level. For multi-stemmed trees the stems are added together. A permit is needed to remove a canopy tree even if it is dead or a recognised weed species. Smaller trees can also need a VicSmart planning permit under the statewide rule (Clause 52.37) if they're over 5 m tall with a canopy at least 4 m wide and the trunk is within 6 m of the front boundary or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.

Before we quote a removal in Boroondara we measure the trunk with you. If it is over the threshold we'll tell you on the spot, and pruning is often possible without a removal permit.

FAQ

Tree Removal in Kew: Common Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Kew?

It depends on the tree's height, how close it is to buildings or lines, and access for the crew. Most residential removals land between about $650 and $2,800, stump grinding from about $250, and pruning from about $350. We quote a fixed price on-site, free, before any work starts.

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Kew?

Kew is in the City of Boroondara. Its Tree Protection Local Law protects private trees with a trunk circumference of 110 cm or more at 1.4 m above ground (or 150 cm at ground level), even dead trees and weed species. Smaller trees over 5 m tall with a 4 m canopy can also need a permit if they're near the front or rear boundary. Pruning a canopy tree to Australian Standard AS 4373 doesn't need a permit.

How quickly can you quote in Kew?

We're based on High Street, Kew East, so we can usually get to Kew for a free on-site quote within 24 hours. We answer 24/7, so fallen or dangerous trees get a fast response day or night.

Do you clean up and take the green waste away?

Yes. Every job includes full clean-up: branches are chipped or taken away, logs removed and the site raked, so you're not left with a pile to deal with.

Can you remove a tree close to my house or fence in Kew?

Yes. Tight backyards and trees over roofs are common in Kew. We climb and lower the tree down in sections with ropes and rigging, so nothing drops on the house, fence or garden.
